The Role

We're looking for a Senior Engineer to join our Financial Services team, the team responsible for every euro that flows through Monta's platform. This is a hands-on, senior individual contributor role where you'll own the architecture and delivery of complex financial systems, working across teams to ensure we can scale reliably as we expand across Europe.

Financial Services is at an inflection point. Our transaction volume is growing fast and already processes millions of euros each month. We're building the next generation of our financial infrastructure, including new billing models and compliance capabilities to support expansion into new EU markets. The problems are hard, the stakes are real, and the work matters.

We need someone who takes full ownership of what they build. Not someone who waits for direction, but someone who sees what needs to happen, drives it forward, and delivers. You will own projects end-to-end, from technical design through to production, and you'll be accountable for outcomes, not just output.

You should also be someone who has embraced AI as a core part of how you work. We use Claude Code extensively across the Financial Services team for everything from writing and reviewing code to designing systems and exploring financial domain problems. We expect you to be an advanced AI user who actively finds new ways to leverage these tools to move faster and think better.

This Is What You Will Achieve

• Redesign Monta's financial backbone. You'll architect and build the new invoicing system that every customer will use, replacing the current infrastructure with a foundation built for serious scale.

• Unblock EU expansion. You'll build the compliance infrastructure (e-invoicing, fiscalization, VAT) that enables Monta to enter new European markets.

• Strengthen the money flow. You'll improve the reliability and scalability of payment processing, reconciliation, and withdrawal systems across a rapidly growing transaction volume.

What You’ll Do

• Own the new invoice system end-to-end. Design and deliver a new invoicing architecture that supports multiple billing models and financial flows as the business scales into new markets.

• Build and scale compliance infrastructure. E-invoicing across European markets. Fiscalization integrations. A VAT engine that handles the complexity of cross-border EV charging.

• Improve payment flows from card to payout. Card payments, automated reconciliation, withdrawal reliability, and working capital management.

• Collaborate across Finance, Legal, Revenue Operations, and Product to deliver new billing and commercial models. You won't work in a silo.

• Drive architecture decisions for systems that must be right. Every euro must be traceable from summary down to line item. You'll design for auditability, correctness, and scale.

• Elevate the team around you. Contribute to the growth of the Financial Services engineering team through code reviews, design discussions, and knowledge sharing.

What We’re Looking For

• Strong backend engineering experience. You've built and maintained production systems at scale. Java/Kotlin preferred, but strong engineers from other stacks are welcome.

• Experience with financial systems. Billing, invoicing, payment processing, or similar domains where correctness and reliability are non-negotiable.

• Proven ability to own architecture across teams. You don't just write code, you shape systems. You've led technical design for complex projects that span multiple teams.

• A strong sense of ownership. You take responsibility for outcomes, not just tasks. When something needs to happen, you make it happen. You don't wait to be asked.

• Comfortable navigating ambiguity. Regulatory landscapes shift, business models evolve, and priorities change. You bring structure where there is none.

• Curiosity about financial infrastructure. Invoicing, VAT, compliance, payment flows. You don't need to be a domain expert on day one, but you're eager to go deep.

• Advanced AI adoption. You already use AI tools daily in your engineering workflow and you're always looking for new ways to apply them. You don't just accept suggestions, you prompt deliberately, iterate on output, and integrate AI into how you design, build, and debug.

• Strong collaboration and communication skills. This role sits at the intersection of engineering, finance, legal, and product. You build alignment fast and communicate clearly with non-technical stakeholders.

Bonus:

• Experience with EU financial regulations, e-invoicing standards, or fiscalization

• Experience with payment service providers or payment infrastructure

• Familiarity with event-driven architectures (Kafka) or high-throughput data processing
