Jun/Mid Level Backend Engineer
Monta is looking for dynamic professionals, trailblazers who will be part of accelerating our reach in the SaaS realm and EV charging industry.
We usually respond within two weeks
💰 🇩🇰 up to 46,000 DKK gross/month (depending on seniority level)
Intro
Monta powers the EV charging ecosystem. With 300,000+ monthly users and millions of charge sessions every month, our platform accelerates the electrification of mobility.
This is a fast-moving place. The problems are hard, the pace is quick, and the bar is high. If you like real ownership, figuring things out, and seeing the direct impact of your work, you’ll do well with us.
AI is built into how we work. It helps us ship faster, make better decisions, and stay lean. Everyone at Monta is expected to use AI tools thoughtfully - and to find smart ways to use them to move the work forward.
Our principles keep us grounded: Build Together & Finish, Sweat the Details, Customer First, and Aim for the Moon.
The best part of Monta is the people - sharp, ambitious, and good to be around. You’ll be challenged, supported, and trusted to deliver.
We’re looking for a Jun/Mid Level Engineer who’s ready to roll up their sleeves, take ownership, and build with us - through the grind and the wins.
This Is What You Will Achieve
Owned an OCPP hardening project - chased down a recurring class of vendor quirks (malformed messages, connection drops, the long tail of hardware oddities), shipped the fix, and measurably cut failed sessions or disconnections for that device family.
Helped shift the team from reacting to incidents to preventing them, through alerting and observability work that catches problems earlier.
Made real progress on OCPP 1.6, OCPP 2.0.1, and OCPI standards work that other services and front-ends across Monta now rely on.
What You Will Do
Build and maintain backend services in NetOps' OCPP and charge point domain - protocol handling, message processing, device state, integrations with hardware vendors.
Debug things that only break in the field. A charge point in Belgium disconnects every 40 minutes - you'll read the OCPP traffic, reproduce it against our emulator, find the cause, and fix it.
Improve observability and alerting. Add the metrics, dashboards, and alerts that mean the next person doesn't have to guess.
Take part in on-call once you're ramped up, with a team that treats a rough night as a reason to fix the system, not a rite of passage.
Automate manual work away - a meaningful part of NetOps' job is removing the human steps that don't scale as our network grows.
Collaborate across Product, Support, and the operations teams who live with the consequences of what we ship. You won't work in a silo.
A brief overview of our tech stack:
Kotlin services (JVM), with Java where it already lives
PHP/Laravel monolith - parts of our charge point domain still run here
OCPP 1.6 / 2.0.1 and OCPI protocol handling
Event-driven work with Kafka where message volume calls for it
Observability via Prometheus, Grafana, and OpenSearch/Kibana
AWS + Kubernetes, with Terraform for infrastructure
What We’re Looking For
1–4 years of backend engineering experience, or a strong junior track record with real production exposure. You write clean, readable code and finish what you start.
Comfortable in a JVM language - Kotlin preferred, Java fine, and we'll help you get there from another stack if the fundamentals are strong. Willingness to touch PHP in our legacy monolith when the work calls for it.
You enjoy debugging, genuinely - logs, traces, packet-level detail, weird one-off reports from a single customer.
A sense of ownership - you follow your work into production, watch it, and flag problems early rather than waiting to be asked.
Nice to have: curiosity about the physical world (our systems talk to metal boxes with electricity in them); clear communication - you can explain what broke and why to someone who isn't an engineer; advanced, deliberate use of AI tools in your daily engineering workflow.
Bonus points for: exposure to OCPP, OCPI, EV charging, or the EV industry as a driver or enthusiast; IoT, embedded, or telemetry systems where devices in the field misbehave; event-driven architectures (Kafka) or high-volume message processing; reliability/monitoring/on-call experience (Prometheus, Grafana, SLOs); Kubernetes, Terraform, or infrastructure-as-code exposure.
If the mission excites you but your experience isn’t a perfect 1:1 match, apply anyway - we care about potential, not perfection.
AI Competency
You’ll be expected to work with AI-powered tools. Some we use:
GitHub Copilot / Claude Code
ChatGPT / Gemini / Claude
Notion AI (docs, knowledge, meeting notes)
Analytics & ML: Langfuse, PyTorch, Mastra
AI-enhanced testing & monitoring (e.g., generative QA, Grafana ML)
We don’t expect mastery of all - but we expect comfort learning, experimenting, and adopting AI responsibly.
Why Monta
Impact, not easy mode - your work matters, and you’ll feel it every day.
Ownership from day one - we don’t micromanage, we expect you to deliver.
The grind is real - priorities shift, and flexibility is sometimes needed to get things across the finish line. But so are the rewards: impact, growth, and a team that has your back.
The people are extraordinary - talented, driven, and fun to work with. You’ll be challenged, supported, and inspired in equal measure.
What We Offer
A yearly education budget and extra days off to use it.
A friendly and social company culture with movie nights, Friday bars, pub crawls, and more.
Free lunch every day.
Pension & health coverage to keep you secure for today and tomorrow.
Paid parental leave to support life's big moments.
Warrants program - be part of our growth story.
Flexible working hours; as long as you're at key meetings and delivering great work, we trust you to manage your schedule.
Please send us your application in English.
To succeed in this position, your spoken and written English skills need to be proficient. Since Monta is a globally active company, you'll be communicating often and regularly with our co-workers and partners around the world, making your professional English knowledge essential.
Please note that we don't accept unsolicited applications from headhunters or recruitment agencies. Unsolicited applications sent to our company or co-workers are considered to be the property of Monta, and we won't agree to pay any referral compensation or recruiter fee without a signed agreement.
